Market leader Nicola needs your support

Mossley’s Nicola Martin is close to winning a national retail award and with help from the town could secure a famous victory.

Already she is down to the final three in the hunt to become the country’s top market manager in the Great British High Street competition.

Now the public have until midnight on November 18 to ensure Nicola, who runs Tameside Markets, beats off competition from her two nearest rivals.

At stake is a share of a £10,000 prize pot plus expert training from Google’s digital taskforce for shops, bars and restaurants and a trip to Twitter UK’s London office to boost her social media skills.

“I’m proud and very pleased to be shortlisted for a Great British High Street Award,” says Nicola who runs a range of council-led markets in Ashton and is overseeing the £4.5million refurbishment of Ashton’s new outdoor market.

“If I’m lucky enough to win, the credit will also have to go to my hard-working team. Without them Tameside’s various markets would not be the success story they have become.

“All our efforts are focused on using markets as a magnet to attract people back into our town centres.

“If people take the time to shop on our high streets they’ll find lots of bargains and quality goods, many of which come from local suppliers.”

high-street-logoAndrew Percy MP, Minister for the Northern Powerhouse, said: “The buzz generated by this year’s competition has seen a record breaking 400,000 votes cast already.

“Nicola has worked hard but this is the last push and there’s still everything to play for, so get online and vote now.”

This year’s competition saw a record 900 entries across 14 categories, including the new categories for individuals and shops. The 12 finalists in the four categories for ‘high street heroes’ were announced October 18.
