Copley pupils help Emmaus Mossley prepare bags for homeless

KIND-HEARTED pupils from Copley Academy in Tameside spent the day at homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley to support their homeless outreach project.

The students visited Emmaus Mossley’s base at Longlands Mill to bag up essential winter items for people who are street homeless.

Eight young people aged between 14 and 15 gave their time to prepare over 100 bags filled with socks, hats, gloves, coats, fleeces, jumpers and personal care items.

Bethany Nuttall, one of the pupils, said: “Visiting Emmaus was really good and very educational.

“It widened my knowledge of all the tiny struggles homeless people go through every day – whether it’s being cold and hungry or the struggle to cope on your own with no help.

“Emmaus offers lots of help to those in need. They offer lots of advice, help people build themselves back up and allow them to get qualifications and start a fresh.

“The staff and companions are lovely and are very encouraging and motivational.”

The bags will be distributed by volunteers from Emmaus Mossley to people who are street homeless in Manchester City Centre.

The volunteers regularly travel to the city centre to give out hot curry (donated by Indian Ocean), tea, coffee, clothes, sleeping bags and essential items to people living on the streets.

Ali Hill, Director of Emmaus Mossley, said: “We were so impressed with the work, behaviour and achievements of the Copley Academy pupils who supported us on the day.

“Everyone at Emmaus Mossley is delighted with the 100 bags they managed to put together for our outreach project – an amazing effort in a short space of time.”

Emmaus Mossley supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a home and work in a community setting. The charity runs a social enterprise in Mossley, selling donated and upcycled furniture, household goods and vintage wares.
