The body of an unidentified man has been recovered from the River Tame in a secluded location near to Millbrook.
Police have been searching for Michael Leadbetter, a companion from homeless charity, Emmaus Mossley, since Sunday, February 26.
Greater Manchester Police have declined to say if the body, found near to Spring Bank Lane, is of Mr Leadbetter, who was due to celebrate his 58th birthday on March 5.
The initial search by police divers and also Oldham Mountain Rescue centred on the Tame at the back of Longlands Mill, close to Emmaus.
In a statement GMP said: “Shortly before 1.40pm on Thursday 16 March 2017, whilst searching for the missing person Michael Leadbetter, police found the body of a man in the river Tame near to Spring Bank Lane in Tameside.
“Police are treating the death as unexplained. Formal ID has not yet taken place and enquiries are ongoing.”
