The Mossley Hollins High School pupil won both the singles and duals titles at the British Outdoor Mogul Skiing Championships in Austria.

In fact she successfully defended the singles’ title from 12 months ago when she was runner up in the duals where two competitors race one another.

The open age British championships were also incorporated into the Austrian Open where there was an international field.

And Catrin, who lives in Carrbrook, excelled finishing sixth in the girls’ open competition and eighth in the duals.

Catrin, who went to St Raphael’s Primary, Millbrook, has been skiing since the age of four.

And after trying slalom racing at Manchester’s Chill Factor, ski cross and freestyle over jumps, she discovered mogul skiing and became hooked.

Mogul skiing, an Olympic sport, comprises one timed run down a steep course over mounds of snow and also including two jumps. Marks are awarded for turn lines on the slopes and also for tricks while performing jumps.

“Catrin was doing slalom racing, but not enjoying it. Moguls has a fun element and that was what appealed,” explained mother Vicki.

Catrin’s progress – she has only being doing this form of skiing seriously for two years -is such that she is also a member of the England Academy that helps to nurture her talent for the ski discipline.

Vicki said though mogul skiing is an Olympic sport she is not looking that far ahead.

She explained: “Catrin knows how tough that would be. All she wants to do is to get better and have fun.

“The England and GB mogul members are really good. They train seriously, but also enjoy themselves.”

Catrin is returning to Austria  later this month to take part in another big mogul championship.

She trains between one and three times each week, depending on whether there is a competition, and venues are Chill Factor and outdoor slopes at Halifax and Kidsgrove.

Catrin, who also enjoys running and trampolining, probably inherits her sporting gene from father Gary who is a very good runner.
