A FORMER tank driver is on track for success with his new top Mossley business venture.
But the former Royal Hussar now has his hands on the wheels of very differing modes of transport.
Neil is proprietor of Turtle Stairlifts and Mobility Scooters, a distinctive shop fronted business on Stamford Street at its junction with George Street.
“There’s a big difference between this and driving a tank,” laughs the 58-year-old former military man.
“I’m a mechanic by trade and after coming out of the Army someone gave me a broken scooter to fix. I did it up, sold it and bit by bit it’s grown from there.
“I used to stand on the markets at Ashton, Oldham, Preston and Morecambe. But the trade isn’t what it used to be and because I am from Tameside, I saw the shop in Mossley and decided to give it a go.”
He’s already doing brisk business with his competitive rates.
“We can beat any price on new or used scooters,” confirms Neil who stocks a wide range of brands from Roma, Drive Medical, Lucas Batteries and Brooks.
“Someone came to me and said they had been quoted £3,600 for one particular model. I told them it should have been £1,795. I also do repairs, servicing and free call out charge.”
But there’s more to Neil’s Turtle empire than mobility scooters.
“We supply and install chairlifts, fit kitchens and create and design wet rooms,” he said.
“Again there are free quotations with no obligation to buy.”
Once inside the premises it’s also possible to buy the pictures and photographs that adorn the walls of the former clothes shop.
Neil, who served with the 13th 18th Royal Hussars, is also proud of his involvement with Hope For Heroes and the British Heart Foundation charities.
