Get set for festive fun and shopping at Tameside Christmas Markets

IT might only be September but you can look forward to mulled wine, festive shopping and fairground rides as dates for the Tameside Christmas Market have been announced.

Santa at last year’s event

Taking place in the Market Street area behind Ashton Market Hall, the markets will run from Friday to Sunday over three consecutive weekends: 24-26 November, 1-3 December and 8-10 December.

The event is looking to build on previous years’ success to offer over 20 traditional cabin stalls, selling handmade crafts and gifts as well as delicious festive food and drinks.

There will be a Santa’s grotto to raise money for local charities as well as free rides with a different attraction every weekend, including donkey rides, a ferris wheel, a carousel and a helter skelter.

New for 2017 will be the opportunity to enjoy breakfast with Santa, which along with the elves and children’s characters, should make for some memorable photo opportunities.

Tameside Council Deputy Leader, Cllr John Taylor, who is responsible for markets, said: “Tameside Christmas Market continues to grow in popularity.

The ferris wheel at last year’s event

“Each year we get more and more positive feedback from visitors and traders and we work hard to build on this to make sure we organise an event that everyone can enjoy and benefit from.

“It will complement the many vibrant shops and market stalls already on offer, helping to support local traders and boost business while providing an enjoyable family event for everyone across the borough.”

Tameside Christmas Market will form part of five weekends of festive fun, including the spectacular Tameside Lantern Parade on November 18 and the Ashton Christmas Farmers’ Market on December 17.

Details on Christmas light switch-ons and other festive events across the borough are set to be announced soon.
