Inaugural Tameside Pride event on track after first fundraiser is sell-out

FUNDRAISING for the first ever Tameside Pride event got off to a fantastic start with more than £500 raised at a music night.

The sold-out event saw 100 people fill Stanley Square Club for performances by Trinity Leigh, Supertrashy Cabaret, Scott Bruton and Band Wolf while there was also a raffle and auction.

The organisers intend to host more fundraisers as they look to raise £1,500 to put on the first Tameside Pride on Saturday, July 6.

The festival campaigns for LGBT+ equality and celebrates LGBT+ life, creating more opportunities that engage LGBT+ people so they can thrive.

There will be a family day-time event at Cheetham’s Park including family activities, acts on stage, a fun fair and a reasonably priced bar and food hall.

That will be followed by an after party for ages 18+ at Stalybridge Civic Hall in the evening, which is still in the planning stages.

Acts are yet to be finalised, however organisers hope some of the funds raised can be used to hire a big-name act in order to attract more people.

They added Tameside Pride is not only a family event, but also a community event with the backing of the council.

John Mercer, Tameside Pride secretary, said: “We are lucky to have Cllr Oliver Ryan as our chairman.

“He has been able to get us support in kind from Tameside Council with a lot of things for the event.

“We want to grow the event for each year and will move the venue around Tameside each time.”

The organisers have experience in putting together events, with John previously being involved with the Huddersfield Pink Picnic and committee member Ellese Oakes having a degree in events management.

This year’s event will also have a focus on mental health within the LGBT+ Community, and they are collaborating closely with MIND and The Anthony Seddon Fund.

John revealed: “We are helping with the setting up of an 18+ LGBT+ support group that meets each Wednesday 4pm-7pm at the Anthony Seddon Fund on George Street, Ashton.”
