Being a loser makes Rick a winner

BEING the best at losing wouldn’t normally help you to scoop an award – yet one man from Stalybridge has done just that after being named his group’s Greatest Loser 2019.

Rick Marsh has lost 6st 1.5lb to take the title, which is awarded to the member of each Slimming World group who has lost the most weight.

“There’s absolutely nothing wrong with being a loser when it feels this good!” said Rick.

“I feel completely different since losing weight – in fact, I’m not done yet. I’m aiming for another four stone before 2019 is over!

“For me though it’s the change on the inside that’s been the greatest – I’m happier, healthier and much more confident now.”

The 32-year-old joined his group in Stalybridge at the beginning of September to support his girlfriend Kim and her mum Chris.

“I wasn’t really aware on how much my weight had an impact on various aspects of my life but coming to group gave me a reality check,” he admitted.

“My consultant encouraged me to give food optimising a go and in my first week I lost 10lb I was shocked at how much id enjoyed it and it really spurred me on.”

Rick’s weight was also putting a huge strain on his health and losing weight has enabled him to become more active.

He added: “Walking through those doors was worrying. I’d never done anything like this before. But I needn’t have worried – everyone was so friendly, especially my Consultant.

Rob is the biggest loser at group

“I’ve made friends at the group and I honestly don’t think I could have done it without their support each week.”

Rick followed the club’s Food Optimising eating plan and swapped the way he cooked for a new way, ensuring he kept lots of variety.

“People think slimming means going hungry, yet it’s not like that at all with Slimming World. I love food and it’s never once felt like I was on ‘a diet’,” he said.

“I still enjoy all my favourite meals like burgers and chips and roast dinners but I’ve learned how to make small changes like using lean meat or cooking with low calorie spray instead of oil or butter.

“It fits in really well with the rest of my family and we can all eat the same meals. This is a change that I’ve made for life and have the tools I need to keep up forever.”

Rick has bagged the slimmer of the week title over 10 times in his group and after being crowned Greatest Loser, Rick and his partner Kim were voted the group’s couple of the year.
