THERE is a familiar feel at Twins Firwood Carpets Ltd in Stalybridge, even though it is under new ownership and has had a tweak in its name.
Nothing has essentially changed as identical twins Neil and Nigel Allen have taken over what was previously Firwood Carpets Company where they were previously employees for 30 years.
They became owners of the Melbourne Street carpet shop on October 1 after previous owner Martin Leah died last April.
“Many people thought it was our business as the boss was not here a lot in recent years due to his health issues,” explained Neil who added they are known throughout the town as the “twinnies”.
They describe it as considerably more work being owners as they start work at 7.30am instead of 9am as employees and also measure up jobs after work.
“We have a lot more to do, but it has been very rewarding,” explained Neil.
They say business has been excellent and beyond their expectations.
“We have not had one bad week since we took over, and it continued after Christmas when trade can often be slack,” added Neil.
While most of their work is for domestic customers, they also do contract work and businesses including nursing homes – they also recently re-carpeted St Peter’s School, Stalybridge.
Neil added: “We cater for everybody from those on a budget to the high price.
“We have accounts with carpet manufacturers from the cheapest to dearest and deal in a wide range of carpets, vinyls, laminates and LVT (luxury vinyl tiles) which have been a big mover in recent times.”
Prices range from £6.99 per square yard and a bedroom can be carpeted for between £80 and £90.
On the opposite extreme, the twins recently had a £4,500 contract to re-carpet and eight bedroom, seven bathroom home in Dukinfield.
