WOOF Stuff, Mossley’s only pet supplies shop, has closed following the retirement of husband-and-wife Philip and Gina Holland who live on nearby Stamford Road.
And it begs the question what next for the premises on Stockport Road which still has its original Victorian frontage?
Philip, 69, had delved into the history and found out it had previously sold shoes, toys, antiques, fish and chips, motor bikes and bicycles.
It was 15 years ago Gina, a former Guide leader at St George’s and All Saints, rented the premises and started the business after taking redundancy from Ashton Brothers. She had previously stood Hyde market.
Philip, who was employed by Tameside Council in facilities management, has worked in the business for the past four years since taking retirement.
He put the decision to retire down to “age and infirmity”.
Philip said the closure will leave a void as there is no other pet supplies shop in the town.
Over the years they have provided food and accessories for dogs, cats, small animals, fish and fashionable pets.
“It has been an eclectic mix and we used to sell rabbit hutches and runs and also stocked chicken food,” he said.
He added there was “dismay” from regulars when they were informed of the closure.
Philip added it had been a thriving business, but trade was hit in recent times by the closure of the Cross Street car park which was located just across the road.
The couple would like to thank the customers for their support over the last 15 years.
