Labour fends off strong challenges in Stalybridge and Mossley borough elections

Labour’s Cllr Pearce staved off a strong challenge from Lee Stafford, from Stalybridge Town Party, to win by only by 75 votes.

Lee claimed 29 per cent of the votes to 32 per cent from Cllr Pearce who attributed the rise in votes for the fringe parties as a protest against the mainstream ones as a protest to Brexit.

Stalybridge Town Party also finished runners-up in Dukinfield/Stalybridge ward where Labour’s David Sweeton, a councillor since 2001, was elected for a further three years.

Cllr Sweeton, who described it as a “very tough campaign” gained 920 votes for a 38 per cent of those cast.

Stalybridge Town Party’s David McGovern had 680 votes for 28 per cent of the total cast.

Conservative Clive Patrick comfortably held on to Stalybridge South with 1,203 votes.

Labour’s Hugh Roderick was well behind on 698 votes.

In Mossley Tafheen Sharif retained her seat despite a strong challenge from Independent Dean Aylett. Cllr Sharif claimed 1,115 votes while Dean picked up 736.

There were two major surprises as Labour snatched Hyde Werneth by five votes following a recount.

It had been held by Conservative leader Cllr John Bell who was standing down after more than 40 years.

The new candidate is Labour’s Shibley Alam who polled 1,473 votes to 1,468 by Conservative Paul Molloy.

The Green Party also won their first seat on the council as they captured the previous Labour stronghold of Ashton Waterloo.

Lee Huntbach, from the Greens, polled 1,073 votes to 935 from Labour’s Jean Drennan.

Of the 19 seats contest, Labour retained 17, Conservatives retained Stalybridge South and the Green Party captured Ashton Waterloo.
