STALYBRIDGE weight-loss Consultants are encouraging anyone who’d like to lose weight and live a healthier life in Tameside to be wary of supermarkets promoting unhealthy products, after new research found that many food retailers are not doing enough to tackle obesity.
A new report, Health on the Shelf, by the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) and Slimming World, exposes the marketing tactics used to drive sales of unhealthy products and reveals that supermarket layout, pricing strategies and the current shopping environment is fuelling the obesity epidemic.
The research found less than 1 in 5 (15%) of the public believe supermarkets are doing enough to tackle obesity, and almost half of the public (48%) believe that legislation should be introduced to require supermarkets to proactively encourage healthier choices.
As part of the research the organisations also surveyed Slimming World members to ask what supermarkets could do to promote healthier lifestyles. They found a staggering 90% want more offers on healthier products such as fruit and vegetables, 68% want more positive signs promoting healthy foods and recipes, and 66% want fewer promotions on unhealthy products.
Slimming World Consultant’s for the Stalybridge groups, says that the difference between the survey of the general public and Slimming World members shows how members of their slimming group learn that with support and guidance they can make better food choices and feel empowered to adapt their shopping routines to ensure they are eating an overall healthy, balanced diet to support their weight loss.
“Being overweight not only impacts on people’s physical health, it can also impact on overall mental and emotional wellbeing and happiness. Slimming World members know how tricky it can be to navigate supermarket shopping in a healthy way – especially when you have a whole family to shop for – with special offers on unhealthy products often everywhere you look!”
“With support and guidance to make better food choices, however, members of the Stalybridge groups feel empowered to adapt their shopping routines to ensure they are eating an overall healthy, balanced diet to support their weight loss. At Slimming World, we believe people should have the flexibility to enjoy a variety of food and drink choices and we equip our members to intuitively make healthier choices so that they can lose weight and maintain it.”
“In fact, the survey of over 2,000 slimmers following Slimming World’s eating plan online or attending a local weekly group, found that since becoming a Slimming World member 86% had changed the way they shop!”
Ben Oliphant, a group member who lives in Tameside has lost nearly 14st since following the Extra Easy Slimming World plan. He says: “Before joining Slimming World I would often put chocolate, crisps and sweets in my trolley just because they were on offer or discounted. I didn’t really plan my meals or cook anything I couldn’t just put in the oven or get from a jar or packet.
Now my shopping habits are completely different, and my whole family have benefited from the changes. I plan my recipes in advance, so I know exactly what I need for the week and my shopping is actually cheaper now because it’s full of fresh meat, fruit and vegetables. I can still enjoy all my favourite foods like a glass of wine or a bar of chocolate in moderation, and so I get what I actually need rather than filling my basket with junk food just for the sake of it being cheap.”
“The thing I love about Slimming World is that it really isn’t a diet. It’s more of a lifestyle change. I can still eat all my favourite meals – curries, chillies, fry-ups, pasta dishes, roast dinners, you name it – just by making small and simple changes to the way I prepare and cook them. The whole family can enjoy my cooking too and they say the meals we eat now are tastier than before! I have so much more energy too since losing weight, I’ve now got the energy after a full day working to run around after my three children. Nowadays I bounce round the supermarket feeling completely in control – it’s a wonderful feeling.”
