Winter does not stop Mossley runners

MOSSLEY AFC Running Club has kept itself busy, despite the winter period having few competitive races.

Members kept busy by attending the special parkruns that happened over the Christmas period.

A large number started off Christmas Day with a 5k parkrun at Alexandra Park, Oldham, before heading home for dinner.

January 1 provided the only opportunity to complete two parkruns in one day, this is known as the New Year’s Day double.

There are numerous options to choose from but this year the club decided to attend Glossop parkrun at 9am and then quickly dash over to Hyde to start their parkrun at 10.30am. This meant 2020 started with 10k already in the bag for anyone starting any yearly challenges.

In December there was another group of Finding Your Feet graduates that completed a 5k run. This included Nicole Cheetham, Abby Homer, Angela Stewart, Emma Welsh, Iain Jeffery, Simon Dowdeswell and Wenda Fitzgerald

It will be another demanding year for Mossley AFC Running club with an increasing number of runners opting to train and enter for the longer distance events.

Three club members will be completing the Virgin Money London Marathon in late April and many are training for their first marathon in Manchester in early April.

The Oldham Way Ultra (40 miles), also in April, will see an increase in entries from the club and will be the first time many people will have covered the distance.

As usual it will be a busy year for fundraising. Father and son Steve and Paul Bates will be completing the London Marathon and raising money for Willow Wood Hospice.

Paul received his place through the public ballot and Steve secured his place through the club prize draw.

Steve chose Willow Wood as his charity of choice for the club to support.

Helen Gregory will also be completing the London Marathon through gaining her place by achieving a ‘good-for-age’ time last year in the Manchester Marathon.

Lorraine Gibbs and Anne-Marie Warburton are in training for the Manchester Marathon, among other events, and are raising money for charity, Lorraine for Tommy’s and Anne-Marie for The Christie.
